Year 1 Tawny Owls Newsletter – Spring Term January 2019

Welcome back and Happy New Year from Dry Sandford Primary School.

We hope you all enjoyed the festive holidays. We love teaching your children so please bring them every day as they can miss so much, and attendance is monitored including late arrivals.  It was lovely to see how many children received attendance certificates last term.  As usual please let the office know if you child cannot attend and try to make appointments out of school hours where possible.

This term our big topic overview is learning about weather and opposites. 

                         

Last term we asked the children to help us decide what we might have in our role play areas and so we are going to have an ice castle/den as it was a popular choice! If you have any soft polar animals, we could borrow, we would be very grateful. On top of our daily maths, literacy and phonics sessions as always there will be lots of fun activities to develop all the curriculum areas.  In Geography, for example we will be comparing contrasting countries. We will be reading and retelling Elmer stories as well as writing our own Elmer adventures. We will be thinking about light and dark in science and learning about dinosaurs and fossils later in the term. PE will continue to be on a Monday and a Friday with focuses this term on team games, healthy living, dance and gymnastics. Please make sure your child has a named PE bag and a pair of indoor shoes.

Forest School sessions have continued to be very successful last term and are a great learning opportunity. Please make sure you bring old warm clothes on a Monday for the children to change into and plenty of layers, gloves, two pair of socks a thin and thick pair etc. The site is very muddy, at the moment, which the children will love! We will be having more updates to the site of the course of the year and the pond development will be ready for small groups to use in March.

Helping your child at home

Children can continue to take a picture book home to share together which they can change every day in the morning from the boxes which on the carpet and pop into book bags. Year 1 will continue to have two reading books sent home which will be changed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and we have guided reading groups throughout the week. It is ideal if you can read with your child every day. Homework will still be sent home in the folders on Tuesday and your child will now also receive spellings to learn related to their phonics sessions. We will continue to focus on handwriting forming the letter correctly in handwriting books this term. Working on times tables, recognising and continuing to know the number bonds to 10 and then 20 will really help support your child in maths as well as knowing one more and one less for any number up to 100. Check for misconceptions with tens and units so that your child knows which way round to write the numbers and what that means for example sixteen is one ten and six units and very different from sixty-one, six tens and one unit. We will also be looking at properties of shapes and sequencing time.

We believe that cooking, tasting and special creative activities are valuable learning experiences and in order to make this a regular activity we would appreciate a contribution of £2:00 in September, January and April to help to cover the cost. Thank you to those who already gave us the money in September it is much appreciated. The children enjoyed helping to make the play dough, making salt dough Christmas decorations and icing firework biscuits last term.

 

We are also always grateful to receive materials for pictures and model making, den making in the garden etc., for example,

Large material, cardboard boxes, carpet tiles, cartons, wool, old Birthday cards, plant pots etc.

We will be sending out letters to keep you informed of what is happening as it comes up so look out for these, and feel free to talk to staff if you have any questions or concerns.
